TikTok ban: Supreme Court decision could create “high tensions" in US, China

As the Jan. 19 deadline for TikTok to either shut down or be sold rapidly approaches, one expert is saying the looming decision – to be made by the U.S. Supreme Court (SCOTUS) – could create “high tensions” between the U.S. and China.

“If they ban TikTok and [U.S. President-elect Donald] Trump doesn't ultimately stop it or at least tell the Department of Justice (DOJ) not to enforce the law, it could really have a cascading effect in terms of U.S. companies in China,” Wedbush Securities’ Global Head of Technology Research Dan Ives said Tuesday. “It would definitely get the U.S.-China relationship with Trump coming back in off on a bad foot.”

Last April, the DOJ deemed TikTok a security risk, prompting Congress to pass the law that stipulates TikTok must be divested from its Chinese parent company ByteDance by this Sunday or be banned over national security concerns.

Though Trump previously supported the potential TikTok ban, he has since changed his tune about the app after his presidential campaign saw a “great response” in late 2024. “Maybe we’ve got to keep this sucker around for a little while,” the Republican leader said during a press conference in Phoenix last month.
