Erie Canal Mules Hauling a Packet Boat

Here's a work in progress reel of Hailing a Packet Boat on the Erie Canal. In the early days of the canal, mules rather than horses pulled the barges. They had more strength and endurance than horses and required less food. They worked in six hour shifts and at the end of their shift were housed in small stables on the barge in exchange for a fresh team being brought out. This way the barges keep moving continuously. This art was made possible with the support of the New York Council of the Arts
