Alignment Of The Lower Limb - Everything You Need To Know - Dr. Nabil Ebraheim

Dr. Ebraheim’s educational animated video describes the alignment deformities of the lower limb, the etiology, the signs and symptoms, and differential diagnosis.
Examination of the patient’s lower extremity includes assessment of the standing posture of the patient, the gait, the leg length and the alignment between the tibia and the femur.
Genu Valgum (knock knee): can occur due to rheumatoid arthritis, degenerative arthritis, trauma or infection.
Genu Varum (bow legs): lateral curvature of the leg. Arthritis of the medial compartment of the knee is the main cause of genu varum in adults.
Genu recurvatum: a deformity in the knee joint where the knee bends backward at the tibiofemoral joint. Hyperextension of the knee beyond 10 degrees. It occurs due to general hypermobility, joint tissue laxity or it can also be due to weakness of the calf and hamstring muscles.
Flexion contracture: inability of the knee to fully straighten due to stiffness, arthritis or pain. A straight knee is a happy knee. A knee that does not straighten fully is a knee that will continue to be swollen, painful and weak.
