Artilleryman Repaired His Gun Under Fire Using Only His Hands and a Boot Lace | Military History

Italy, 1944. When the firing pin mechanism on Sergeant Howard Chen's howitzer failed mid-battle, the gun fell silent. Infantry ahead needed support immediately. Chen had no spare parts. He had his hands, his tools, and — when the standard repair failed — his boot lace. He improvised a friction mechanism using the lace threaded through a modified component he reshaped with a rock and a bayonet. It shouldn't have worked. Every mechanical principle suggested it wouldn't hold more than one firing. It held eleven. Eleven more rounds fired through a gun repaired with a boot lace. The infantry position was saved. When the regimental armorer examined the repair later, he stood looking at it for a full two minutes. Then: "I don't know what this is." Chen: "It's a boot lace." Armorer: "I know what it is. I don't know what it's doing." Chen: "Working."
