I've owned this great machine for five years and have never defeated Magna Matra. The right outlane has always been wide open, so I decided to return it to the standard position and have a really good crack at beating her. The game you are about to watch took about 30 games attempts in one day. The glass is off to improve the picture quality, so apoligies but the sound is a bit harsh.

The ROMS are Italian, hence the Italiano countdown from Magna Matra. It doesn't seem to do anything in the game. In Capcom's Airborne, the tricks are timed, and I think this countdown is related to that but was never properly coded.

Pinball Magic is pure pinball, because while it has so much random and unpredictable action, you learn that precise shooting and ball control are essential and make all the difference in acheiving the goals. The challenge is taming the speed of the ball. The Capcom flippers are super snappy. You must use live catching, drop catching and dead bouncing to slow the game down.

I took this machine to a festival where it had over 300 games played. No one got a replay! You cannot flail about and hope to score well. This game punishes the player for poor decision making. You can score more points by locking balls and playing for multiball (Magic Mayhem) jackpots, but defeating Magna Matra is the real goal and the most rewarding. There's quite a few other little features in the game not discussed here, but you can find them in the rulesheet at IPDB.com

The music, toys, targets, ramps, subways and callouts are fantastic. This game has survived in my collection, while terrific games such as Tron, Iron Man, Ghostbusters, Game of Thrones, The Shadow, Data East Star Wars and Bram Stoker's Dracula have been moved on.

When you are trying to defeat Magna Matra you can get distracted trying to hit the jackpot shots. Be aware that you can instead use the multiballs to contiue to progress through the game by hitting the required shots. In multiball, some required shots can be affected however - namely the ones that have a mechanical action. This is Locking a Ball, Silencing the Crticis and Floating the Ball. These goals won't become active until after the multiball has ended.

Do not be tempted to shoot for "switches" to compete the Amateur Hour hurry-up. The spinner is the only good way to get the switch-hits up and it's dangerous if you cock it up.

Make good use of ball locks. One ball locked is easy to achieve and every time you shoot the ball under the hat you will get a two ball multiball (Mini Mayhem).

Shooting under the hat can be a tricky shot, so keep an eye out for a lit ball lock light on the left ramp when the next required shot is to shoot under the hat. You can lock a ball instead, which will give you a fresh ball to plunge into the hat for a Mini Mayhem.

Lastly, the ball saver won't start timing until a switch is hit after the plunge. The playfield is not "validated". This means you can short plunge past the loop wireform and accidentaly drain straight away and get the ball back. This will give you a second chance at your plunge or skillshot while the timer hasn't even begun.

The sequence for the Genie Bottle stair climb is RLLRRLLRRLLRRLLLL...? as far as I can tell.

Enjoy the video and try and play one of these on location. It's a special game.
