Critical Points & First Derivative Test | MCV4U Grade 12 Calculus & Vectors
Master Critical Points and the First Derivative Test for MCV4U!
In this lesson (Unit 4, Lesson 1), we dive into the first application of derivatives for curve sketching: Critical Points. We’ll generalize the concepts of local extrema (maxima and minima) and use the First Derivative Test to determine where a function is increasing or decreasing.
In this video, you will learn how to: ✅ Define and identify Critical Points (where $f'(c) = 0$ or is undefined). ✅ Apply the First Derivative Test to find intervals of increase and decrease. ✅ Differentiate between local extrema and absolute extrema (extreme values). ✅ Use the algorithm to find absolute maximums and minimums on a closed interval. ✅ Solve real-world optimization problems (e.g., pollution levels in a river).
This lesson is essential for mastering the MCV4U Ontario Curriculum and preparing for your curve sketching unit test and final exam.
