How to replace glass in vinyl window. DIY Window Pane Replacement: A Beginner's Guide #vinyl #window
How to replace glass in vinyl window. If you have a vinyl window you can do this too. Never done this before so could be a mess. But after I got at it it went ok. You can do this too. Hey YouTube,
So, I had to replace a window pane in my vinyl window recently. It's only been about five years since we installed it, but we had an unexpectedly severe snowstorm this year with winds hitting crazy speeds. Unfortunately, the outside pane couldn't handle the pressure and broke. Luckily, the inside pane stayed intact. I had to tape up the broken pane temporarily and wait for about six weeks to get a replacement window because of where I live.
During this time, you could see some condensation building up inside where I used a suction cup to hold the window in place. I couldn't film the process, but I did take some pictures to share with you. I'm not an expert in this, but I'll walk you through what I did quickly. I'll also post the pictures below for reference.
First things first, when you're removing the broken pane, you'll notice two plastic shims at the bottom. Don't forget about them! Take them out, clean them up, and make sure to put them back in the same spot.
Next, you'll need to apply two-sided tape on the inside of the vinyl frame. I didn't have any at hand, so I reached out to the manufacturer. They suggested using a bead of 100% silicone around the perimeter instead. This should seal the window effectively when you push it in. If you can plan ahead, though, getting two-sided glazing tape would be ideal.
Now, regarding the silicone, I'm not entirely sure if I applied enough. It seemed like it was sufficient, but I guess time will tell. When you push the window in, you should see the silicone squeezing out, indicating a good seal.
Don't worry if you're new to this like me. My first attempt went relatively smoothly. Sure, I probably didn't do everything perfectly, but I took my time and followed the steps as best as I could. Removing the trim took longer than expected, but once that was done, it was just a matter of replacing the horizontal and vertical pieces.
Remember, when replacing the window, ensure the shims are in place at the bottom to maintain the correct distance. It's a small detail, but it's crucial for warranty purposes.
Overall, if you're thinking of trying this yourself, I encourage you to go for it. It might surprise you how manageable it is once you get started. Thanks for watching! #homeimprovment #windowrepair #canada
