Many legends blaze trails loudly with a roar, but others, like Katherine Johnson, lead us in their own direction with a gentle whisper. After the release of Margot Lee Shetterly's book and the 20th Century Fox film "Hidden Figures," the world learned about Johnson and her colleagues, the women who played a key role at NASA in America's space race. A prodigy, Johnson sailed through her mathematics education with ease, but cutting through the prejudice and ignorance of pre-Civil Rights institutions would be more daunting. Nonetheless, she persevered, and became an impossible force to ignore after NASA asked her for the moon and then she gave it to them.
