Cenas Remotas - Brian Ellis (Rodrigo Baggio, 2020)

Part of a solo video recital presented by the Margins Guitar Collective

Notes:
‘Cenas Remotas’ (Remote Scenes) is a piece for guitar and electronics based on a specific programmatic concept lasting 05’20’’.

Relying on some definitions of the terms ‘Remote’ (Connection of Electronic
Devices) and ’Scenes’ (Units of Action), the programmatic aspect is the interaction of two different timbres from a single generic source - the Guitar (in its classical and electric models).

Besides, another definition of ‘Remote’ emerges once the electric guitar track was recorded in a distant location (recording studio).

The guitarist will develop the Classical Guitar part over the Electric Guitar track, utilizing the motifs written on the score to form the whole structure of the piece, which is divided into two main sections.

Each one of the sections has a specific sonic ambience.

So, the guitarist must approach the motifs in a personal manner to emphasize these ambiences as he feels them (from the e-guitar track) during the performance of the piece.

This personal approach must include a set of well known parameters used on the Variation technique: Permutations, Augmentation, Diminution and Suppressions of the Motifs.

Therefore, each one of the resulting motifs performed on the structure will be understood as an unit of action on the context of the piece.

Besides, the performer must choose the sequence and the number of the motifs that will be used in a particular performance.

The Dynamics and Tempo must be freely chosen by the performer as well.

Guitar fingerings and note positions on the fretboard may be replaced according to the performer’s will.

Any other musical aspect not indicated on these notes must be freely decided by the performer.

This procedure gives the piece a unique performance each time (another use of the word ‘Remote’) emphasizing its programmatic concept.

And both musical platforms of the piece - the Motifs for the Classical Guitar and the Electric Guitar Track - are based on the same and exclusive musical source - the F# Phrygian Dominant Scale (a.k.a. the Spanish Phrygian Scale - a reference to one of the original locations of the modern Classical Guitar).
