Bigger Basket For the #RoyalCam Albatross Chick Weight Check | June 24, 2025

Since hatching at 286g on the 28th of January, the Signal Station Trig chick has grown to 6.4 kg on day 147 (Tuesday 24th of June 11.14am). This is a 1kg decrease on Saturday’s weight, which is understandable has she hadn’t been fed since then. But before she could be supplementary fed, GLG arrived in. A larger basket is needed for weighing now and the chicks are getting stronger!

As the weight was very low prior to GLG feeding she was reweighed as is now at 8kg, average for a female of 147 days and a feed of 1.6kg! Thanks, GLG!

Although no longer at the nest site both parents have still been able to find her, and she now has a well-established ‘play nest in her new location. Increasingly, chicks are holding their wings out into the wind in preparation for fledging in September. Average fledge date is 240 days.

A yellow band inscribed with E55 is now Signal Station Trigs chick permanent colour marker. This is an individual band so that we will recognise her in years to come. Did you know that albatross can live to 60 years or more? She will also receive a Stainless-Steel band on the opposite leg closer to fledging.
