Titanic’s distress flares were reportedly mistaken for celebration lights. #Titanic #History

On April 15, 1912, the Titanic struck an iceberg and began sinking into the freezing North Atlantic.
As panic spread onboard, the crew fired 8 white distress rockets into the night sky.

Just 10–20 miles away, the SS Californian saw the flares…
but reportedly failed to understand they were emergency signals. Some crew members allegedly believed the passengers were celebrating or signaling normally.

The Californian’s wireless operator had already gone to sleep, and the ship never came to Titanic’s rescue in time.

By the time help arrived, the “unsinkable” ship had vanished beneath the Atlantic.
More than 1,500 people died in one of history’s deadliest maritime disasters.
