Cinema Style Footage on DJI Osmo Action
This is a short and simple test to see how the DJI Osmo Action (a tiny action camera) can be encouraged into creating a video style resembling cinema footage.
I just did this as a test for me but I thought I'd upload it anyway.
Subject is the Cwmorthin Valley above Tanygrisiau in North Wales (a favorite place of mine!).
So the technical bit.
Captured in 4K with a 100mbs data rate but downsized in Handbrake to 1080p but retaining the 100mbs bitrate. This seems to yield a much sharper file than capturing 1080p directly on the camera (which will give you a 60mbs bitrate). I like working in 1080p but the extra stage of capturing 4K then downsizing does seem to be worth it.
Frame rate is 25fps which is extremely visually similar to cinema's standard 24fps. Shutter speed is 1/50 second which gives the magic 180 degree shutter angle that cinema generally favours.
Lens had a Polar Pro ND16 filter attached during capture and a light NG has been applied digitally in post.
Framed with cinema format in mind, the footage is presented in 2.35:1 as most feature films are.
No sound. The camera captured audio but I've disregarded it and applied some relaxing music instead.
I do think it looks quite nice for such a small cheap camera (compared to proper professional cameras!), especially my original 1080p MP4 file (which is so sharp it cuts my eyes!) but I expect it'll get compressed significantly when uploaded.
