This is a beautiful little machine manufactured in the 1920s or 30s by L. O. Dietrich in Altenburg, just south of Leipzig in eastern Germany. The attachment tin shown at the beginning of the video has a picture of the factory on the inside of the lid, and the date 1871 was when L. O. Dietrich (then in partnership with others) started to manufacture sewing machines. At the beginning of World War 2 the factory switched to the manufacture of arms, and being in the part of Germany that was eventually occupied by the Russians, the company did not survive the war. This machine is an absolute treasure - it makes a beautiful even stitch, and we hope to encourage other owners of Little Vestas to use their machines. Because it is such a tiny machine it was difficult to show the bobbin winding without getting hands in the way; also, for loading the bobbin into the shuttle we were hampered by bad light - so if you are unsure, watch the video "How to wind a Singer sewing machine long bobbin and load the shuttle" - the method is exactly the same. We hope to improve the quality of our videos with time. We record using natural light, and today we had lots of clouds passing over. Well, what do you expect? This is England!
