Basement: Vans Sidestripe Sessions | VANS

This week’s session features music by English rock band, Basement. Basement steps into the shoebox and performs two songs from 'Beside Myself'; “Reason For Breathing" and “Be Here Now" accompanied by art created by Ellen Rutt.

English rock band Basement has etched out a special place in the rock/emo/grunge scene. Despite a brief hiatus in 2012, Basement has released four full-length studio albums. Each record marks growth sonically and personally for the band. Their latest release in 2018 'Beside Myself' explores one of today's most discussed issues; mindfulness and the struggle to live in the moment. Throughout the album frontman, Andrew Fisher, expresses his anxieties of living in the modern world. Lyrically it's personal and authentic. “I don’t think making this album has changed my perspective in any way, but I do think it’s good to talk about things that you’re struggling with," Fisher explains. Basement recently wrapped a tour supporting Weezer and Pixies this past spring.

Ellen Rutt is a Detroit-based multi-disciplinary artist with a colorful, bold, and fresh approach to mixed-media painting. Within the last year, she has worked on creative projects for FORM Festival, The Belt, Detroit Institute of Arts Museum, Vans US Open, Murals in The Market, the House of Vans Detroit Pop-up and has shown in galleries and museums across the nation.

Vans Sidestripe Sessions Season 2 is a global series celebrating collaboration, diversity, and expression through music and art. The two-song sessions feature performances from Vans' extended family of musicians; backdropped by original art installations from emerging artists. Each session is unique in sight and sound.
