Also called purple cone flower, Echinacea is famous for two things: it's used in health remedies and it's also a beautiful, dependable, perennial native of North American great prairies.

With daisy like flowers, often five inches across with stiff stems, it's super cold hearty, all the way from Zone three to nine. It may look delicate, but don't you believe. Echinacea blooms from early summer all the way into fall. The sturdy plants grow to about three feet with handsome, deep green foliage.

In this mid-summer photo, you see Echinacea in full bloom with Black Eyed Susans, which bloom a little earlier. When the Susans fade, the Echinaceas keep their color going for several more weeks.
