Stolen Genius: The Black Ironworkers Behind Britain's Industrial Dominance
The Industrial Revolution is often credited to British inventor Henry Cort and his revolutionary iron-making process. But what if the truth is far more complex?
In this documentary, we uncover the hidden story of how enslaved Black metallurgists in Jamaica developed the ironworking techniques that transformed scrap metal into high-quality wrought iron—years before Henry Cort patented the process in 1783. This innovation helped power Britain’s railways, naval ships, factories, suspension bridges, and global industrial dominance.
Based on research by historian Dr. Jenny Bulstrode (UCL Science & Technology Studies), this video explores the Jamaican foundry at Reeder’s Pen near Morant Bay, where skilled African ironworkers combined reverberatory furnace techniques with grooved rollers adapted from sugar mills. Their knowledge—rooted in West and West Central African ironworking traditions—may have been appropriated and repackaged as the famous “Cort Process.”
This is not just a story about iron.
It is a story about innovation, erasure, and the overlooked role of Black intellect in shaping the modern industrial world.
If you enjoy hidden history, untold stories of the Industrial Revolution, and deeper perspectives on African contributions to global development, subscribe for more powerful documentaries.
