Cecil Sharp Project - Meadows of Dan. Shrewsbury, 24th March 2011
Cecil Sharp Project
A joint commission between Shrewsbury Folk Festival and EFDSS
Caroline Herring, Steve Knightley, Andy Cutting, Kathryn Roberts,
Jackie Oates, Jim Moray, Leonard Podolak, Patsy Reid
On March 18th 2011, the eight artists gathered together in Shropshire for a 7 day residential, with an artistic brief to create new works that have a 'resonance and relevance' to Cecil Sharp, and in particular his Appalachian travels and song collecting between 1915-1918.
The residential was immediately followed by 3 concerts (one in Shrewsbury, and two in London), these performances were professionally recorded, and will be mixed and produced for a CD release in the summer, a DVD is also being edited for release
This song accounts Cecil Sharp and Maud Karpeles' first trip into Appalachia in 1916. Patsy Reid begins with a song in Scots Gaelic, followed by Caroline Herring and Kathryn Roberts, and ends with Jackie Oates singing a verse from Sweet William, the ballad referred to in this song.
Jim Moray dulcimer, Leonard Podolak banjo, Steve Knightley guitar, and Andy Cutting accordion.
