Russia and China Veto UN Resolution Seeking to Reopen Strait of Hormuz

Russia and China have vetoed a United Nations Security Council resolution aimed at reopening the strategic Strait of Hormuz during the ongoing war involving Iran.

The resolution received 11 votes in favour, but Russia and China blocked it using their veto power, while Pakistan and Colombia abstained.

The vote came shortly after U.S. President Donald Trump warned that “a whole civilization will die tonight” if Iran failed to reopen the waterway and reach a deal.

Less than two hours before the deadline, Trump pulled back his threat and said the United States would suspend planned strikes for two weeks if Iran agreed to a ceasefire and reopened the Strait of Hormuz.

About one-fifth of the world’s oil supply normally passes through the strait, and Iran’s blockade during the war has pushed global energy prices higher.

Iran accepted a two-week ceasefire and said ships would be allowed to pass through the strait under Iranian military supervision.

Trump said Iran had proposed a “workable” 10-point plan to end the war.

Russia’s U.N. ambassador Vassily Nebenzia said the resolution would have given the United States and Israel “carte blanche for continued aggression.”

China’s U.N. ambassador Fu Cong said the proposal could be misinterpreted or abused and warned it could have serious consequences.

The original resolution, introduced by Bahrain, initially authorized countries to use “all necessary means” — including military force — to ensure ships could pass through the strait.

However, after opposition from Russia, China and France, the language was repeatedly weakened and eventually limited to encouraging defensive coordination and escorting commercial vessels.

Bahrain’s foreign minister, Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani, criticized the Security Council for failing to act, warning that the world risked being held hostage to economic pressure.

Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations, Amir-Saeid Iravani, welcomed the veto and said the proposal misrepresented Iran’s actions, which he described as lawful self-defence.

The conflict began on February 28 when the United States and Israel launched attacks on Iran, leading to Iranian strikes on Gulf countries and escalating tensions across the region.
