CJ series Willys Jeeps. CJ-1, CJ-2A, Cj-3A, CJ-3B, M38, CJ-5, CJ-6, CJ-8 were produced by several corporate parents, the Jeep CJ line was officially ended in 1986. More than 1.5 million CJ Jeeps were built, having continued the same basic body style for 45 years since the Jeep first appeared. Widely regarded as "America's workhorse", the CJs have been described as "probably the most successful utility vehicle ever made." In 1944, with the Allies confident the war would soon be over, the production lines of the Willys MB military jeep began to wind down. Willys-Overland began to look at the development of a Jeep vehicle for the postwar civilian market. With 4 million American farmers owning neither a pickup nor a tractor, Willys-Overland executives saw a big post-war market for a Jeep adapted for use on the farm. Perhaps inspired by World War II correspondent Ernie Pyle’s description of the Jeep: “It’s as faithful as a dog, as strong as a mule and as agile as a goat.”

This vehicle was intended for agricultural and industrial applications, a market that Willys-Overland felt was a perfect fit for the utilitarian features that gave the MB great success in the war.
Willys-Overland developed two prototype vehicles of the Civilian Jeep before releasing the CJ-3A into the civilian market in 1949.
In 1950, the CJ-3A became the basis for a new military variant, the M38, to replace the now aging Jeep MB model.
The M38 and its variants were to be the lightweight vehicle of choice for the US Army and armies around the world.
