Basic Sign Language to use while wearing a Face Mask

Deaf people are having a really difficult time understanding people wearing a face mask. Face masks are commonplace and compulsory in some cases thanks to the Covid 19 Pandemic. Learn some basic signs from British Sign Language (BSL) so you can communicate with deaf people.

Many deaf people rely on lip reading for communication and when everyone covers their face with a mask, this presents an obvious challenge. The signs in this video are designed to help you manage brief conversations with deaf people and avoid embarrassing and awkward situations.

Other things you can do to help communicate with deaf people include:
- Wearing a face mask with a clear window built in revealing your lip movements.
- Keep a notepad and pen handy to write down messages.
- Go into a room with less background noise.
- Consider if it's safe to temporarily remove your face mask for the duration of the conversation.
- Most importantly, please be patient.
