Do you want to teach English in China? You've heard about the great pay, short working hours, and amazing travel opportunities at every turn? Great! I want to make sure this dream becomes a reality, which starts with you nailing your job interview.
First, make sure you are prepared. This seems obvious, but make sure you carefully read any information the school may have sent you. Did the school not send you any information? Then this might be a red flag and reflect the quality of the school you are interviewing for.
Secondly, present yourself well. Again, this seems simple, but you are likely going to do a video interview. So, make sure your video device works ahead of your interview. Make sure to dress appropriately, and make sure you are well-lit, and the interviewer can see and hear you well.
Next, show enthusiasm. Teaching English to young learners is about engagement. You can show this ability by smiling, making eye contact, and expressing yourself during your interview.
Also, you should anticipate questions. The interview may ask about your ESL knowledge. Think about grammar, classroom management, behavior management, or any other questions that are likely to be raised. You can practice answers to these questions ahead of the interview. You don't need to know everything, but think about how you might go about learning new skills and information that you currently don't know.
Moreover, make sure to ask questions. Try to ask at least 3 if you can. This shows the interviewer you are serious, and are giving the role careful consideration. You can ask the interviewer to expand on something they've already told you about the school.
You should also make sure that you check out the school. This can involve checking the school's rating on glass doors, going through their website, and checking things further during the interview. Is the interviewer asking you enough questions? Do they seem legitimate? Are they leaving you with any doubts? The interview is a great opportunity to feel confident about the choice you are about to make.
Lastly...relax! Yes, trying to relax is a paradox, but take a big breath and just be yourself. You want to show the interviewer that you are calm, and confident, and will be able to stand up in front of a class of students. Fake it until you make it!
