The Viking Age, often dated 793-1066, is often portrayed in familiar ways in the history books. Small raids on island monasteries lead to bigger armies, expansion across the North Atlantic followed by Christianisation and Hastings tying it off with a nice bow.

But now, a new book takes a fresh look at this period, avoiding the stereotypes and the much trodden ground, and instead looks at the forgotten Vikings, the overlooked corners of the Viking Age. As Amberley describes it:

Focusing on lesser-known aspects of the period, Alex Harvey taps into more obscure regions of the world these people visited, more obscure characters, and more obscure cultural elements. Examples include the evidence for viking activity on the Azores and Madeira, thirteenth-century Baltic raids, and the presence of viking armies in the Netherlands long before they became a threat to England.
