Mililian Galis - Batá Yoruba rhythms Pt 1

This is the first part of an 8 part MANANA series showcasing Mililian Galis in Santiago de Cuba with his wife and son.

Batá toques are multi-facted linear rhythms that incorporate various sections and conversations. Through specific rhythmic changes made by the Iya (largest Batá), Galis is signalling to his wife and son playing the itótele and okónkolo exactly how their pattern should change for the following section. That is exactly what is happening at the drop at 52 seconds where he looks around to get their attention.
