Friction Fire Tuesday - Maple on Pine
For Bushcraft USA's Friction Fire Tuesday: A Maple spindle on a Pine hearth board. This video is complete from burn in to the end. Many parts are fast forwarded significantly to aid in brevity.
A few weeks ago, I read a discussion on using harder spindles on softer hearth boards with the result being the spindle drills through the hearth board prematurely. I wanted to experiment with this concept. While most maple is still classified as a soft wood, it is reasonably harder then this short leaf pine. At least that is my amateur observation of these two woods. The result was 6 coals in about 27 minutes. Skip to 8 minutes in to get straight to the flames.
