Today, Lawman Guitars is Presenting...
A beautiful 1944 Kay model K-20 Archtop Hollow Body Guitar. This beauty has the original tuners, bridge and even the pickguard. What a Historic Instrument!
These Archtops were made by Kay from 1938 to 1947. This one with this Kay Logo and the Blue F-Hole sticker is shown in the research materials as one of those dates. The previous owner thought it to have been purchased in 1944 ... No numbers help us date it any closer.
These guitars sound great ..nice and bright and really loud. The Mahogany back and sides help that as well as the arched back. Yes, this beauty even has an arched back on it! Laminated top that looks great with the original Natural finish. Lots of finish crazing on the entire guitar. Shows its very light Nitro finish! Some dings here and there but no cracks. We repaired a rather large break on the lower side. See pic 12..
The neck angle was not great when we got it. We had our Tech do a New York Neck reset on it. That involves a thin kerf is cut into the neck heel and then secured with a bolt that we fill and add some finish to make it look good. See pic 10. Now the neck is still nice and tight to the body and it plays with nice easy playing action. Bar Chords are no problem now on this cool guitar.
Check out the Checkerboard body bindings. All there and beautiful. The neck is also bound with no cracks or breaks. I love the original pickguard. Still in great shape. We had one like it that we sold a few years ago. Brought over $100 just for the pickguard! Original nut and the original frets are still in great shape! I have never seen a bridge like the one on this guitar. The base and top are correct but check out those adjustment screws. Very cool. See pic 4. The only thing no original is the tailpiece. The guitar had a non original tailpiece on it. We replaced it with a correct vintage tailpiece to make this piece now all correct. Check out those tuners! We cleaned them a bunch! The are beautiful!
The guitar has a 25 3/4 inch scale neck and the nut measures 1 11/16 inch. The neck is a nice medium C. A lot of these have a V neck. This one does not. The guitar has a 15 1/2 inch lower bout and measures 42 inches long. 3 1/4 inch wide body.
We did not get the original case with this guitar. The shown softshell case is a newer but probably a 70's model. It fits the guitar great. A great home for your cool guitar.
Sold as-is no returns as its vintage and used. Thanks for respecting that.
