With a life-changing moment within reach, Matt Bynum seized the moment.

Bynum, a crew member for years with Kalitta Motorsports and now the car chief for Alexis DeJoria’s nitro Funny Car team, won the coveted March Meet March 8 at Auto Club Famosa Raceway in Bakersfield, Calif.

“It is pretty cool,” Bynum said. “I still can’t believe it. We came here and we just ran really well all week. We made a test run on (March 4) and a test run (March 5) and we showed a ton of potential and we finally got it all together Q1 and went 5.57 and didn’t really look back after that.”

Bynum, the No. 3 qualifier, clocked a 5.617-second run at 250.13 mph to def. No. 16 qualifier Matt Melendez’s 5.749-second lap at 224.73 mph.
