India’s Only Mud Volcano Erupts After 20 Years | Baratang Island, Andaman | Current Affairs 2025

India’s only mud volcano, located at Baratang Island in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, erupted on 2 October 2025 after almost two decades of dormancy (last major eruption – 2003 / 2005).

This eruption was caused by the sudden release of pressurized gas, water, and mud deep beneath the surface — a reminder of the tectonic activity along the Indian and Burmese plate boundary.
Unlike lava volcanoes, mud volcanoes emit no magma, only mud and gases such as methane.
