Sidney Poitier Funeral-Denzel Washington, Oprah Winfrey, Barack Obama Broke Silence On Death of Icon

Denzel Washington, Oprah Winfrey, Barack Obama, and more celebrities were paying tribute to the legend and icon, Sydney Poitier.

Denzel Washington' sent condolence to Sir Sidney Poitier's family following the legendary actor's death.

Washington's tribute read,

"It was a privilege to call Sidney Poitier my friend. He was a gentleman and opened doors for all of us that had been closed for years. God bless him and his family."
In 2002 when Washington was accepting an Oscar for Best Actor for his role in Training Day, At the podium, he gave credit to Poitier, whom he had presented with an Honorary Award earlier that evening. His speech caused a standing ovation and brought the legendary actor to his feet.

In his words Washington said,

"Forty years, I've been chasing you, Sidney," Adding "They finally give it to me, what they do? They give it to him the same night." 

"I'll always be following in your footsteps," he added. "There's nothing I would rather do, sir. Nothing I would rather do."

That night, Washington had done exactly that. He was the second Black man to win a Best Actor award after Poitier did it first in 1964 for his performance in Lilies of the Field. While the two shared legends worked in the same industry but never collaborated. .
Poitier died on Thursday, and the news of his death shocked many across the globe as tributes started trickling in from actors and world leaders for the fallen actor and humanitarian legend

Oprah Winfrey took to Instagram and shared about her friend whom she had openly regarded as a confidant and guide for so years.

Oprah wrote,
"For me, the greatest of the 'Great Trees' has fallen: Sidney Poitier. My honor to have loved him as a mentor. Friend. Brother. Confidant. Wisdom teacher," she captioned a photo of the two together.
Adding

"The utmost, highest regard and praise for his most magnificent, gracious, eloquent life. I treasured him. I adored him.''

She concluded with,

He had an enormous soul I will forever cherish. Blessings to Joanna and his world of beautiful daughters 🙏🏾"

Former US President Barack Obama, who had presented Poitier with the Medal of Freedom in 2009, also paid tribute, in an Instagram post he wrote,

"Sidney Poitier epitomized dignity and grace, revealing the power of movies to bring us closer together.''

Adding "He also opened doors for a generation of actors. Michelle and I send our love to his family and legion of fans."

Continue to sleep in peace Poitier our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and everyone impacted by his untimely death.
