Lion warfare in Africa - Shaka jr. Tsalala vs Majingilane
Ranger’s Report: After the death of his father Kinky Tail and the expulsion of his uncle Mr. T in June 2010, little Shaka junior had to defend himself alone against the bloodthirsty Majingilane males.
The young male from the Tsalala pride was seen one week in August moving through Marthly just north of the Sand River. He was looking very thin and trying to hunt baby chicks. He was last seen moving east towards the Manyelethi River in Londolozi.
In Nov 2010 Londolozi reported:
"This might not be considered a “special sighting”, but it is definitely a sighting that stood out and one that everyone was talking about for days. The sighting I’m referring to is when the Majingi males killed the Tsalala cub. The two Tsalala females had two very playful cubs with them and we had seen them on our morning drive as well as early in the afternoon drive. After sunset, when we returned to the lionesses and their cubs, the females got up to drink water. Whilst drinking water, two Majingi males appeared and started chasing the male cub. The Tsalala mothers swung around and chased after the males. They attacked the males, trying to distract them from their cub, but to no avail. They soon realised that they were no match for the two stronger males, took the female cub with them and ran off while the Majingi males killed the male cub.
It was a very sad month for us as far as the lions go. In one week we had two mortalities. The feared Majingi males have now successfully killed off the last Tsalala male cub. They were not their offspring and the Majingi males would want to mate with the females in the near future so that they can give birth to their own cubs. The Golf Course male also succumbed to the numerous injuries caused by the Majingi males. For weeks he would run a pattern of getting hurt by the Majingi’s, recovering and then getting hurt again. But sadly, only a few hours after the Tsalala’s last male cub was found dead, we also found his lifeless body. Unfortunately, this harsh reality is the way of nature and it has been that way for thousands of years: survival of the fittest."
