If watching a film is simply our willingness to suspend disbelief, then costume design has the power to make or break that illusion. It can control how we view characters and how they exist within their environments. It shapes how characters grow and are perceived. Michele Clapton and Heidi Bivens discussed their journeys within the fashion and film industries, as well as their processes, inspirations, and current projects.

There is not a world that Michelle Clapton can’t design for. Her work covers it all from period dramas to thrilling fantasy series to vibrant musicals. Clapton has been nominated for nine Emmy Awards, winning six for her work in Game of Thrones and The Crown. Clapton’s most recent work includes whimsical and eccentric garments for The Secret Garden, leading her to a BIFA costume award nomination. Her work captures people’s imaginations and leads the viewer into the world of the film.

Spring Breakers. The Beach Bum. Mid90s. Euphoria. Heidi Bivens has influenced the way fashion is viewed in film with designs that are both authentic and one of a kind. Her path to costume design started at Hunter College, where she studied Filmmaking, eventually moving to New York City and taking the costume design world by storm. Bivens focuses on capturing authenticity and telling stories through her work, something that people today want and need more than ever. Unsurprisingly, this has led her to an Emmy nomination for Euphoria as well as being one of the most in-demand costume designers today.
