Big Iron, The Story Behind The Song | Esoteric Internet

"With the Big Iron on his hip..."
Country-Western legend Marty Robbins' most iconic song is the Wild West ballad: Big Iron. A song that tells the too familiar story of an Arizona Ranger dueling the notorious outlaw "Texas Red". While a simple, catchy ballad on the surface, the tale stretches a lot deeper into Marty Robbins' background than most wound assume. It finds its origins in Southwestern culture, the idea of the "Singing Cowboy", and the mysterious man named Robert "Texas Bob" Heckle.

The Arizona Ranger and "Texas Red" have become famous on the internet, but what inspired them has not. Both are characters purely formed from Marty's impoverished childhood in Arizona and his cowboy relatives. Though he never became an actual cowboy like his wild rancher grandfather, Martin David Robinson is still remembered by his beloved "Singing Cowboy" identity he called "The Drifter".

Who then truly was the man "with the Big Iron on his hip"?
