Mendelssohn - Piano Collection

Best-known for his Italian and Scottish symphonies and for the incidental music to Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Felix Mendelssohn was also a notable organist and pianist. His most famous piano works are the eight volumes of Lieder ohne Worte (Songs without Words).

These short lyrical pieces were written and published at various points throughout Mendelssohn’s life. The rising popularity of the piano throughout the 19th century (to the point where it became a standard item in middle-class households) contributed to Mendelssohn’s own popularity. His Songs without Words are accessible to pianists of various levels, and thus enjoyed widespread circulation. However, this also brought critics to under-rate their musical value for a long time.

Mendelssohn’s fascination for Scotland, captured in his famous symphony and Hebrides Overture, also echoes in the Fantasia, originally titled “Sonate écossaise”. The Fantasia captures characteristic aspects of Scottish folk music and with its three movements (slow, moderate and thunderous) recalls another famous “Sonata quasi una fantasia” – Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata.
