PORTMEIRION North Wales. THE PRISIONER: The Village - Filming location
PORTMEIRION a village designed and built by Sir Clough Williams-Ellis between 1925 and 1975 and was used as the filming location for The PRISIONER staring Patrick McGoohan.
The Prisoner is a 1967 sci-fi series about an unnamed British intelligence agent who hands in his resignation and is the abducted and imprisoned in a mysterious coastal village, where his captors try to find out why he abruptly resigned from his job.
The Prisoner stared Patrick McGoohan who previously stared in Danger Man playing a US secret agent was co-created by Patrick McGoohan with McGoohan playing the lead role of Number Six..
Number Six spends the entire series trying to escape from a mysterious prison community called "The Village", and to learn the identity of Number One. One series, 17 episodes were filmed between September 1966 and January 1968, with exterior location filming in Portmeirion, Wales.
Portmeirion is now a tourist village. Designed and built by Sir Clough Williams-Ellis between in the style of an Italian village and is now owned by a charitable trust. The village is truly beautiful, fully of brightly coloured and stylish buildings. On a sunny day, you could almost believe your somewhere like Portofino in Italy.
You can stay in Portmeirion, in the Hotel or one of the cottages within the village. You can even stay in the same cottage Partick McGoohan stayed in while filming the prisoner. Otherwise, like us, you can visit for the day. The Village is open from 9.30am to 6.30pm, 7 days a week and Day tickets cost £15 for an adult and £9 for children and those under 5 go free.
Along with the Hotel and cottages for those wishing to stay the night, there are a number café’s serving hot and cold meals. There are also a number of seating areas inside the food hall or at picnic tables throughout the village. There are three shops in the village: The Prisoner Shop with souvenirs of the tv series, an art Gallery and a general gift Shop with gifts, toys, housewares and Portmeirion Pottery.
We found that There are some steep slopes and steps, so it might not be suited to people with mobility issues or if you are overweight, but as a plus size person myself I found that taking it slow and resting we found the site very accessible. As a plus size person, and there are plenty of areas to sit and just take in the scenery throughout the village.
If you have accessibility requirements. They have a dedicated disabled car park close to the main entrance with plenty of spaces and wheelchairs can be borrowed from the Tollbooth.
All of the main areas of Portmeirion Village are accessible by wheelchair including the Welcome Centre, Battery Square, Collonade and The Piazza, the Ship Shop, Town Hall and the surrounding shops, The Hotel and Coastal Path.
Unfortunately only guide and registered assistance dogs are allowed in the grounds at Portmeirion, but we found the staff very helpful when we contacted them, suggesting a number of local doggy day care places to leave our dog when we visited.
