If you have a child in Canada, there are two types of benefits which you may be entitled to, which are maternity benefits and paternity benefits. Maternity benefits are only for those who are pregnant or have recently given birth. Paternity benefits are for the parents of a newborn or adopted child.

These benefits are not just for the parent who has given birth but are for both parents of a newborn or adopted child. Some of these benefits are also available for surrogates.
