Virology 2015 Lecture #19: Vaccines

Vaccines have been highly successful at preventing viral disease. Passive vaccines are products of the immune response (antibodies or cells) that are given to provide temporary protection. Active vaccines are altered viruses that do not cause disease but induce an immune response and immune memory that protects against later when the virus is encountered. In this lecture we consider examples of different types of vaccines, including inactivated, subunit, virus-like particle, and infectious attenuated vaccines. Examples used comprise poliovirus, influenza, hepatitis B virus, and human papillomavirus vaccines.
