The Haunting Of Hill House Plot Recap

Ok so The Haunting Of Hill House centres around the Crain family and it takes place over two time periods. Initially we join them in 1992 as they purchase the property with the goal of renovating and selling it.

However, strange things begin to happen and slowly the group are haunted by the mysterious ghosts that inhabit the walls of the home.

The Hidden Ghosts

Firstly are hidden ghosts which pop up throughout the season in the background of scenes.

I’ve taken a tonne of notes and watched the entire series on a large projector so I think that I caught them all but if I didn’t make sure you comment below and let us know where you spotted any extra hidden ghouls. I’ve also used screenshots as opposed to footage on the whole because some of these appear on screen for a spit second.

Episode 1

Ok so the first one doesn’t appear till 33 minutes and 33 seconds into the first episode. Throughout the scene in which Hugh talks to Steve about escaping the property you can barely make someone out in the corner of the room.

However when Hugh picks Steve up and turns to face the door you can quite clearly make out a woman standing and watching them.

As they go to leave the property we can actually see two standing in the door frames as they run down the stairs.

The first is a woman standing under the archway and the second is a man and a woman who are standing on the opposite side.

The Haunting Of Hill House Ending Explained

So that’s the main hidden aspects within the show but what about the hidden aspect of it’s ending.

Well in order to discuss that we have to discuss the house itself.

Now from the off we get the sense that Hill House is just pure evil. It tortures it’s occupants and feeds them with hallucinations that slowly drive them insane.

It can bend space and time, ressurect the dead and because of the mould that exists within the house, even the air itself is a poisonous gas.

The houses main goal is to feed on the living through driving them to take their own lives and it does this through carefully curated ghosts and spectres that pray on the Crain family’s worst fear.

Each ghoul and apparition has been designed with one goal in mind, to bring the family back to the Red Room, which is the houses’ stomach, so that it can feast on them.

During the show, the house purposely twists and repurposes the Red Room so that it appears to be a safe area in which each member of The Crain family can relax and be digested. To Luke it is a tree house, Steve sees a games Room, Olivia a reading room and so on. It is a room which is tailor made towards them so that they can feel some sense of sanity whilst also being driven insane.
