Claude Vivier - Shiraz

“Shiraz” for solo piano was a piece written by Canadian composer Claude Vivier in 1977, and is inspired by the eponymous city in Iran. It is formally dedicated to the pianist Louis-Philippe Pelletier (who had requested that Vivier compose this piece with the same mannerisms as Robert Schumann’s Toccata), and is also indirectly dedicated to two anonymous blind singers whom Vivier admired after encountering them at a Shirazi marketplace.

The piece begins on a tetrachord consisting of C, E-flat, E, and G (the notes are split evenly, similarly in Karlheinz Stockhausen’s Klavierstück IX), and much of the vertical harmony was built on the Fibonacci series. In contrast to Stockhausen, Vivier’s dynamic markings are less frequent, and the piece does not employ integral serialism to the same extent as Stockhausen’s Klavierstück.
