Union Pacific AMPNGR at Stenner Creek Trestle HD

Watch in High Definition! Here's a going away shot of a southbound Union Pacific Autorack Train descending off of Cuesta Pass and crossing Stenner Creek Trestle, just north of San Luis Obispo. San Luis Obispo is roughly the halfway point on Union Pacific's Coast Line between the California Bay Area and Southern California. In 2015, the Coastline is almost devoid of freight trains, save for the Wunpost to Dolores unit crude oil "Oil Cans" train, a few locals, and empty Autorack trains. Because the oil cans normally make their movements during the night, Autorack trains are almost exclusively the only through freights that operate over the Coastline during daylight. These empty Autorack trains normally originate in Milpitas, California. They arrive in Milpitas loaded with automobiles from points across the Union Pacific system. Once emptied there, the trains have to be returned to their loading points, often Nogales, Arizona or El Paso, Texas. To ease the traffic on their busier route over the Tehachapi Mountains, Union Pacific routes these empty trains over the Coastline, where train traffic is light (often only consisting of Amtrak trains). The trains travel down the line to Los Angeles, where they can then turn east to join up with the Sunset Route in Colton to reach their final destinations. This particular train originated in Milpitas earlier in the day on November 12th and is travelling to Nogales, Arizona, thus giving it the symbol AMPNGR-12. Union Pacific SD70M 4007 leads with SD70M 4480 trailing. The locomotives are in heavy dynamic braking to hold the long train back as they make their way down the final few miles of the grade into San Luis Obispo. The train is so heavy that Union Pacific actually readied the San Luis Obispo based helper locomotives to assist the train over the grade if needed, but it ended up making the grade by itself.
