#ES920 #ES8 #Kawai

Greetings to all, and welcome to the Merriam Pianos YouTube channel. We’ve got the old vs the new today as we pit the massively successful ES8 against it’s new replacement, the ES920.

We’ll cover all of the upgrades, but most importantly, the tone, which is where Kawai really focused their efforts. The ES920 has some big shoes to fill, so keep watching to see if we think the ES920 succeeds in this endeavour!

First Impressions:

Playing these two instruments side-by-side for the first time was really quite eye opening. While some folks have opined online that they don’t think Kawai really did a whole lot here to advance the ES920, we are Merriam have the opposite view, and feel that on a playability/musicality level there’s a very significant difference.

Right away, the difference in sound output is extreme, most likely owing to the redesigned on-board speaker setup as the ES8 used a pair of 15 watt speakers, whereas the ES920 beefs those up to a pair of 20’s.

They both use the same Harmonic Imaging XL engine, but the ES920 incorporates a new motherboard design, developed in concert with Onkyo (along with the speakers and amps), that greatly upgrades the signal processing. Now we’ll do a deeper dive into some subjective opinions about the sound differences.

Piano Sound:

Right off the hop, there’s a huge difference in the clarity, fullness and power of the sound. The centerpiece of the ES8 was the quality of the on-board speakers and tone, so for the ES920 to so thoroughly blow it away is a serious achievement.

The amount of on-board tones didn’t change much, but there are 3 additional tones on the ES920. The main acoustic piano samples built off of the SK-EX, EX and SK-5 return once again,

The amp simulator returns and hasn’t changed, and the rhythm/accompaniment feature remains the same.

The E pianos and other tones are also the same as the ES8, but they are rendered in greater detail due to the improved signal processing and speakers. If sound quality is important to you, you’ll be shocked at the fidelity of the ES920.

Piano Action:

The ES920 uses the Responsive Hammer III (RHIII) action from the ES8, but it’s a second generation version with a redesigned sensor strip. Despite the ES8’s success, there was on issues on many units with regards to the sensor strip, so the fact that Kawai addressed the sensor issues is excellent.

The RHIII uses a triple sensor and escapement. The triple sensor delivers very accurate MIDI output, and escapement makes it possible to play technical classical and jazz music on this action.

All around, this is one of the top plastic digital piano actions available.

Piano Features:

While the ES8 would support a triple pedal board, the ES920 now supports both a floating triple pedal and triple pedalboard. Both instruments have ¼” outputs and line inputs.

The ES8 did not offer any Bluetooth connectivity, while the ES920 incorporates both Bluetooth MIDI and Audio. This is a great upgrade, and the speaker system is good enough that you essentially use the ES920 as a stereo with the Bluetooth Audio.

Both instruments have USB recording, with both MP3 and WAV.

With a quick firmware update, the ES920 becomes compatible with Kawai’s Piano Remote App, which allows you to completely control the ES920 from a smart device. This is a super slick app!

Conclusions:

On the surface, these two instruments appear to be quite similar. As you dig a little deeper however, it becomes clear that the ES920 incorporates some really meaningful differences, especially with regards to piano sound.
