Gravity Falls is one of the most loved animated series of a generation, so naturally, there are tons of fun stories about its creation

Creator Alex Hirsch said in an interview that Gravity Falls being in Oregon was no coincidence. One day, while driving through the state, he saw a sign for the town of “Boring, Oregon”. Hirsch said that Gravity Falls was either what he always imagined a town called “Boring” would be like, or what the complete opposite of a town called “Boring” would be. Either way, the town served as part of the inspiration

Speaking of inspiration, many of the characters are based on Hirsch’s life experience. The obvious, Dipper and Mabel being based on he and his sister. But maybe less obviously, Soos, was based on a friend of his from CalArts. The real-life Jesus’ mystique became a bit on an in-joke, with his age known as being older, but indeterminate. He went on to say “one day he took off his hat, revealing he was bald. It was vaguely traumatizing for all involved. Out of respect we never asked him [his age].”

Even the most charming fraudster in the west, Grunkle Stan, is based on Hirsch’s childhood. Though not his great uncle, Hirsch’s grandfather was also named Stan, and even sported similar lounge attire as the Grunkle we know and love – including the gold chain

The title “Grunkle” was also inspired by Hirsch’s great aunt Lois calling herself their “Graunty Lois” and the more I talk the more I’m suspicious that Gravity Falls might actually be a factual account of Hirsch’s life, considering how much of it is in there
