Greetings. I'm Tim of Govberg, and welcome to the world of IWC. Today I'll be your guide to the usage, care and servicing of your IWC Portugieser Perpetual Calendar reference 5033-02. It's important to remember that this is an automatic winding watch via the case back winding mass, but should you wish to wind it manually up to its maximum rated power reserver of 168 hours, you can do so by taking crown in its first position, flush to the case, and turning it in a clockwise direction. Twenty turns should be sufficient to start the movement, at which time you can set the time, set the calendar, and the watch will continue to run properly while energizing itself by the natural motion of your wrist.
But should you wish to wind it up to its full rated power reserve of seven days, simply continue turning with the crown flush to the case in the first position in a clockwise direction. Due to the bridle style main spring, which slips to relieve excess strain, you cannot accidentally overwind this time piece. Continue turning until you see the power reserve indicator at 3 o'clock reach the absolute end of its travel, at the end of the Day Seven calibration. Remember, continue to turn until you hear a click or a snick. This is a natural and expected interaction of the main spring barrels with the bridle style main springs slipping, signifying a fully wound watch, but rest assured there is no hazard to the time piece.
Setting the calendar does require that the time piece be out of the danger zone. The danger zone is the period from 8:00 PM to 4:00 AM when the watch's automatic turnovers fro the calendars are all engaged. Because of this broad span of time when you can damage the movement by attempting to use the quick set for the perpetual calendar, it's important that you ensure the watch is out of the danger zone before you make a change to the calendar. First, advance past midnight to ensure that you're through the date change before you attempt to adjust the calendar. Now, pull the crown out to the second position. In the second position you can adjust the calendar with all indications in sync. You can see how the day corresponds to a jump of the date. The turn through the month changes the month indication, and throughout the moon phase at 12 o'clock is in motion.
Now, there are two cautions. First, you must not set the system while the watch is indicating 8:00 PM to 4:00 AM. The second is that the system fully sequential and coordinated cannot be turned backwards. You can see, I'm looking at the calendar for the year 2017. If I were to accidentally advance past my current day and date, I would have to wait for the calendar to catch up with the time I set to the watch. If I set so far ahead that I couldn't simply wait for the time to catch up, I would have to send the watch in for a service for a watchmaker to correct the indication. So, remember no to set the watch past the current date
With respect to water resistance, it is a diminishing specification. That is, the seal's age and lubricants die up. Unlike mechanical specification, which is constant, water resistance will diminish. Therefore, IWC recommends having your watch water tested at most every 12 months at an authorized service center to ensure that factory rated hermeticity is retained.
It should be mentioned, however, that shock and concussion cannot be remediated so easily. High impact activities such as riding ATVs or mountain bikes, skiing, fire arms marksmanship, batting, tennis or golf should not coincide with use of the watch. Remove your time piece prior to these activities to prevent the mechanical movement from concussive damage.
Ultimately, IWC recommends having a complete mechanical servicer for your watch every three to five years. This will involve restoration of water resistance, refinishing of the case to factory appearance, replacement of worn straps as well as cleaning, oilingand adjustment of the mechanism. This should be performed only at IWC authorized service centers, as these agencies solely have thee trained personnel, specialized tools and original IWC factory replacement parts to maintain the value of your watch as both instrument and as investment. Moreover, only these agencies are authorized to back all work and labor invested, as well as parts provided with an IWC factory service warranty.
