TODAY: Public hearings set on deadly Kerr County floods as questions remain.

AUSTIN - Starting today, state lawmakers will begin sharing what they’ve learned while investigating the deadly July 4th floods in Kerr County.

The Texas House and Senate general investigating committees are holding a two-day public hearing in Austin, where members will receive an update on the flooding, including conditions at Camp Mystic. Lawmakers are expected to hear from a state investigative team that visited the camp last week as part of a broader review.

The hearings come amid growing calls from Kerr County residents for a full and transparent investigation into the disaster. While the meetings are open to the public, only invited testimony will be presented.

Many in the community say the scope of the investigation should go beyond Camp Mystic and include all areas impacted by the flooding. A total of 119 people in Kerr County died as a result of the disaster, prompting demands for answers about preparedness, warnings and response.

Kerr County resident Kalen Mills described the devastation in emotional terms, saying entire neighborhoods were swept away overnight.

“Our friend’s family was swept away at Casa Bonita, the entire neighborhood gone,” Mills said. “Several neighborhoods all up and down the river gone, and we want them to hear that we were all sleeping in the middle of the night. Nobody knew that this was coming.”

Lawmakers say the findings from this investigation could play a key role in shaping future legislation when they return to Austin in 2027.

The hearing is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. and will continue into Tuesday.
