Why must women be pigeonholed into being either tough as nails or soft and nurturing? Why are we faced with opposing messages? Why can’t we be both? Taking a closer look at the construction industry, women constitute a mere 10.9% of its workforce. It's not gender that dictates ability, but rather the gender gap prevalent in fields like science, technology, engineering and mathematics – of which construction is a part – that is responsible for this severe underrepresentation. As a business owner and the CEO of a major construction company, Melissa believes that when we stop nurturing self-doubt and start fostering self-confidence, we will witness greater equality in nontraditional roles. By addressing these significant questions she urges men to put an end to disparaging women in the workforce and aims to inspire women to embrace nontraditional roles in society. Melissa Noel owns five businesses and is the CEO of Noel’s Fire Protection LLC. She represents women in the male-dominated construction arena and will bring an amazing idea to the stage: How to Use Your Nurturing Side as Superpower. Melissa serves on multiple boards and belongs to several local community organizations. She has been married to her husband, Brian, for 31 years and has been self-employed for almost 20 years. A mom of three and grandma to one, she is currently pursuing her degree in Political Science at University of Maryland Global Campus.
