Around the globe, half of all people live with no access to a safe, clean toilet—largely because they live in places with no sewage plumbing, so they can’t flush. But extending clean toilets to these 4.7Bn people can't involve flushing! Scientist-innovator Dr. Diana Yousef and her team at change:WATER Labs are tackling the global sanitation gap from the most molecular level: because human waste is mostly just water, they have invented a toilet that “flushes away” waste by evaporating it! Inspired by Diana's work on water-recycling options for NASA’s Space Station, and by looking at how plants use evapotranspiration to move molecular water between the ground and the air, Diana explains how her team developed the iThrone, a toilet that not only doesn’t use or pollute water, but actually converts human waste back INTO pure water. Dr. Diana Yousef, PhD, MBA, MA is Founder and CEO of change:WATER Labs, a mission-driven cleantech venture to extend safe water and sanitation access to poor and vulnerable communities around the world. Diana’s career spans the arenas of academic life sciences research, international economic development, strategy consulting, finance and private equity investing. Her work has been recognized globally and covered in publications such as Forbes and Bloomberg, and she has spoken at events including at the 2019 UN Climate Action Summit.
