Since the identity of the Darkness Elena will have to fight is still unknown, I mixed different threats from the past (and the Dragon Flyers from Race to the Edge) to represent the last test Elena has to face before becoming Queen.

PLOT:
The Amigos have failed. Avalor has fallen to Vigo, Ash, Chatana and the Darkness.
Mateo was defeated (Fiero is a stand-in in this video) and hides away from everyone, feeling unworthy. Elena does her best to convince him that he matters, but the ring on Elena’s hand pushes Mateo over the edge and his anger and heartbreak about Elena’s political engagement to a duke bursts through. He nearly confesses his feeling then and there before Elena interrupts him. Elena tries to explain that she tried to protect him from the ire of the other royals should they ever marry. An argument starts, ending in Elena leaving Mateo behind for his protection, breaking both of their hearts.
But shortly afterwards she realizes her mistake and has taken back her engagement. She asks Mateo for help in joining the rebellion to win back Avalor. Reluctantly he agrees that their magic is stronger together.
The time has come: the Darkness has arrived. Elena’s final test. Convinced that she is the only one able to stop it, Elena says goodbye to her friends, refusing to sacrifice their lives in order to help her.
Elena travels to the Shadow Realm, not noticing Mateo who has followed her with Miggs. Inside, she meets a fire spirit, the personification of magic. When Ash hurts the creature, the Darkness comes because magic itself is tainted. There is only one place that can heal the spirit: the magical lake of Azaluna. Upon arriving in the cave, both Elena and Mateo are overwhelmed with memories of the day they met in this very place, where Mateo helped free Elena after 41 years of magical imprisonment in the amulet. Elena succeeds in diving to the bottom of the pool and restoring the healing magic. But the Darkness fights back. As the cave collapses, the giant Kazim appears. Gabe and Naomi, who have followed Mateo, help fight him. But in the end, both Naomi and Mateo are captured. Ash freezes Elena and Gabe in place and when they are finally able to move again, Mateo and Naomi are gone without a trace.
Back in the camp Gabe and Elena can only watch as Chatana shrouds the palace in darkness. Elena vows to get Mateo and Naomi back. Both Gabe and Elena reminisce when they see reminders: Elena takes Mateo’s spare tamborita with her and Gabe remembers the dance he shared with Naomi upon seeing the hat of her carnival costume.
Being able to track down Vigo’s ship, Gabe can free Naomi, but just as Elena is in front of Mateo’s cell, she is magically forced away by Ash.
Elena, Gabe and Naomi follow the prison ship with new determination. Elena starts to slowly realize how her feelings towards Mateo have changed. While Mateo is interrogated with a truth spell, the others have tracked down the old temple. While Elena is sneaking inside, Mateo has managed to break out of his cell. Both Ash and Mateo spot Elena’s entrance and together, the Princess and the Royal Wizard are able to stun Ash. Still being under the truth spell, Mateo cannot help but tell Elena that he loves her. Before she can react, Ash fires another spell, hitting Mateo. Elena knocks out Ash and carries the barely conscious Mateo to safety.
Again, Mateo doubts his strength. Afraid to lose him, Elena screams that he enough for HER. And in that moment she knows that loves him too. Their happiness is short lived, however. Weakened by the spell Mateo passes out. Elena, Naomi and Gabe carry him to the Sunbirds (in this video Mateo has not met them, yet) to let him heal.
When Mateo wakes up, both he and Elena cry with relief, hugging tightly. Quickly being back on his feet, Mateo is amazed by the magical sunbirds, bobarding “Quita” with questions, while Elena is overjoyed to have him back again.
One week later, the palace is won back and Elena makes her engagement to Mateo official. He is still nervous, but they stand and rule side by side. Together.
