HIKING TAIWAN: FOUR EASY 3000m+ PEAKS IN 1 DAY AT MT. HEHUAN 合歡山, 一天四峰:奇萊山訓練 (有中文CC!)
Mt. Hehuan (3422m) in central Taiwan is an easily accessible, but beautiful high mountain region that makes for a great day trip for hikers of all abilities.
Join Richard and Hugo as they scale four minor peaks among some of the best mountain scenery around.
Buy a print of the thumbnail and some of my other photos on the Website:

The Trails
The trails are well marked and easy to follow, with a mixture of flat dusty paths, steps, and a bit of rope work on Hehuan Sharp Peak (合歡尖山).
Hehuan Main Peak (合歡山主峰) is the longest at 1.78km, with Hehuan East Peak (合歡山東峰) next at 1.05km, then Mt Shimen (石門山) at 0.78km. Sharp Peak is the shortest of them all at just over 100m (or around 15 minutes uphill.)
None of them are particularly difficult and can be done with just a daypack and in normal footwear.
There are three other trails in the vicinity:
Shimen North Peak (3275m), Hehuan North Peak and Hehuan West Peak (both 3145m),
Shimen North Peak is similar to the other four, but the final two peaks are slightly longer and can be done as a separate single day hike (total 14km return.)
Travel Logistics
The four trails that we did are all within easy reach of the parking lot at the Hehuanshan National Forest Recreation Area (合歡山神林遊樂區).
It takes about two and a half hours to drive there from Taichung City.
Public transport is also available.
Nantou Bus has a number of services, including one that departs from Taichung (both at Gancheng Station and the High-Speed Rail Station), stopping at Puli and Qingjing Farm (清境農場).
Details are here (http://www.ntbus.com.tw/en-cjfm.html).
The last leg from Qingjing Farm to Mt. Hehuan can be done on the 6658A bus (http://www.ntbus.com.tw/cj-m.html).
Drones
As Mt. Hehuan is part of Taroko National Park, you need to apply for a permit to use a drone.
The permit process is quite straightforward and the form is in English.
Download the form and regulations here (https://www.taroko.gov.tw/en/Event/NewsDetail?id=6721).
A useful reference tool and map on drone restrictions in Taiwan can be found here (https://www.flyerlee.com/drone-restricted-airspace-in-taiwan/).
