Gene Expression
Genes can be switched on and off like light bulbs, and this controls many characteristics of cells. Stem cells will differentiate into many cell types, but that is based on which genes are expressed. Environmental factors, both internal and external, can affect gene expression. These factors include: alcohol, diet, radiation, hormones, temperature, and many more.
