Scientists say 2023 is the hottest year on record. Last week, the UN's annual climate conference concluded in Dubai - with more than 200 nations agreeing they must "transition away" from fossil fuels.

The commitment was hailed as historic by some, but inadequate by others, because the agreement fell short of calling on nations to phase out the use of oil, gas and coal — something Pacific leaders called "a death certificate" for their region.
