JUGGLING IS HISTORY!

We are passionate about juggling. We love everything about it – the challenge, the creativity, the props, every style of performance, doing it, watching it, talking about it, reading about it, and yes, even dreaming about it!

That is why, when we finally had the opportunity, we were thrilled to visit David Cain and the Museum of Juggling History in Middletown, Ohio. This guy’s enthusiasm for juggling makes us look like two disinterested bystanders! Not only has he written countless books and articles about juggling, he has also amassed what is probably the world’s most comprehensive collection of juggling props and memorabilia. His knowledge is encyclopedic, and it was such a treat to be there to see, learn, and talk juggling, surrounded by props previously thrown by the best in the business. We even got to juggle some stuff!

No matter what you do - whether it be work, play, passions, hobbies - there are others who came before you. There are pioneers, influencers and innovators, who have caused things to be done the way they are done today. Their stories deserve to be told, their equipment should be preserved, and those upon whose shoulders we stand need to be remembered and credited for their contributions.

We encourage you to find ways to learn about the past, and honor those who came before you. You don’t need the depth of commitment of David Cain - it’s not necessary to turn your home into a national treasure! But take time to research the past, connect with those who have done the work before you, and celebrate the pioneers. Sometimes we feel like we’re doing the work alone, but there are others who came before, and others who are doing it now, who have played a role in what you do today. “The study of History is the beginning of wisdom.” -Jean Bodin

EXTRA CREDIT

In this video we mention juggler Bobby May (1907-1981) several times. For you non-jugglers, May is considered to be one of the best American jugglers ever, combining technical skill, creativity, and showmanship like no other. He was smooth, dapper, and elegant, while performing some of the most difficult and quirky tricks imaginable. From his cigarette behind the back toss to his mouth, followed by the same with a lit match, and then lighting the cigarette with both held in his mouth, to his outrageous headstand balance on a pedestal while bounce-juggling five balls on a drum, he has always been one of our favorites. And now, we’ve juggled his props!
