With more than half of England under stricter lockdown measures, many of the papers today focus on the tensions between central government and local leaders over the proposed increased Covid restrictions. Those in the north have refused to be moved into stricter lockdown measures with Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham claiming central government have treated the north with contempt. Broadcaster Iain Dale thinks that this won't be resolved amicably but that this will be damaging to the Conservative party who have spent the last 15 years trying tor rebuild their reputation in the north. Former Home Secretary Jacqui Smith defends the actions of Mayor Andy Burnham and believes central government should strop expecting people in the north to take the pain of their incompetence.
